This shouldn’t be new to you, you might’ve learned this in history class!
The very first discovered cave sketches told unimaginable stories.
They felt it was needed to scribble paintings for others to understand their ideas and experiences. Moreover, in the modern-day, it is one of the most fundamental communication methods. Storytelling is not only important as being human but also as a songwriter in words and visually.
Uri Hasson, a professor from psychology and neuroscience from Princeton said:”a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that the listener turns the story into their own idea and experience.”
Obviously, there’s some reason and evidence to prove how storytelling has great impacts on our lives, but don’t worry this is not psychology-, neuroscience- neither history class, in other words, we’ll save you the extensive readings.
We previously mentioned owning ideas and experiences. As a music-artist-storyteller, it helps to take a professional view of your own experiences.
How can you be a professional in your own experiences? Start to determine your values, are they sustainable for you and for those affected by your work?
There is no doubt that we act on what we know and last but not least what we think we know. Embrace all life experiences and polish your intellect time by time to learn from them. Secretly you might find a song idea! When performing that song, let listeners visually experience that your natural behavior matches with what you are saying.
The philosopher Confucius said:”Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
Prevent adding difficult words to your lyrics, preserve your natural language. Nowadays artists like to fill up the whole 4 to 5 minutes with their vocals on the track. Be aware of over-rapping or over-singing the track! No need to compete, become one with it.
Most people will naturally lose attention when talking too much anyway, why do you want that to happen with your music? Balance is healthy. Keep your story as simple and effective for people to relate, suited in the right ambiance.
Today’s homework:
Firstly you need to feel comfortable letting go of the role as a ”storyteller” with the great challenge to give yourself feedback with the least assumptions. When Audiophrenic composes music for artists or brands, we patiently sit and engage in the perspective of the listener instead of the narrator.
Tell us about your first try and if you think it will affect your creative process!
Which song has put most of these elements into practice? A good one to start is J.Cole – Crooked Smile.
